Initiative Description: A multi-component intervention package consisting of (a) interdependent group contingencies, (b) public posting and progress monitoring, and (c) mystery motivators (MM). Teams selected different colored race cars and discuss team performance and set homework goals. Interdependent group contingencies are established by linking rewards (i.e., mystery motivators and car advances) to each team’s collective performance track and scoreboard are posted publicly in class. Team cars that cross the finish line first selected one of 15 MM envelopes hanging from the ceiling. Envelopes contain paper slips with names of high preference rewards derived from student responses on a reinforcement menu.
Study Results: Radical Raceway produced immediate and consistent improvements in all students’ homework completion performance, including 10 adolescents with Individualized Education Plans.
