Initiative Description: Active lessons included a series of general games (freeze tag, relay races) focused on either math or language arts. Schools were randomized to the active learning (n=10 math, n=9 spelling) or traditional, sedentary academic lessons (n=9). Moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and step count were assessed during data collection week through accelerometers (Actigraph GT3X) starting on Monday and ending on a Friday. On-task behaviors were observed using 5 second momentary time sampling for 15 minutes prior to an active lesson and for 15 minutes immediately following the active lesson. Time on task was assessed for half of the schools in the fall semester and the other half during the spring semester by observing students either before or after lunch depending on the class schedule. The procedures were the same in control schools, only on-task behaviors were observed 15 minutes pre/post traditional academic lesson.
Study Results: Significant improvement in time on task behavior.
